GM is developing its own replacement with the help of Google. More details here and here. It would be one thing if they offered a viable alternative to Apple Car Play. No, they will no longer allow Apple Car Play to serve GM customers’ needs in electric vehicles from GM.
That’s nuts!
A GM alternative won’t fit in your pocket. It will be burned into the dash of your GM car. How does that software synchronize with the user’s Apple device? And will Apple allow GM software access to data on user activity, content, and preferences that their iPhones have?
I think the market is going to say nuts to GM instead.
And GM will eventually back down — as they did on the charging connection standards a few weeks ago — because buyers and dealers will both walk away from this decision.
What’s your take on this?
Tom - You are right. It is my understanding that in the USA Apple devices outnumber Android. I personally would not buy a car without a good Apple Car Play. Also, I would NOT switch to an Android device. So, as far as I am concerned GM is reducing its potential market for EV cars by more than 50%. To me that is not a smart move.
Toyota did that years ago, only to revert back to Apple and Android integration in 2020.
(I know that Tesla too only offers a proprietary system...)
